Booking requests or booking software: what a small service business actually needs

Online booking sounds like a must-have, but many small service businesses don't want strangers dropping into their calendar without a conversation first. There are two good ways to handle it.

Booking requests: you stay in control

The visitor picks a day and a time (or a part of the day), says what they need, and sends it. You confirm by phone or email. This suits jobs where you need to see photos, check the address or quote first: cleaning, repairs, grooming, lessons.

A good request form offers only the times you actually work, and stops offering a time once you've confirmed it to someone else.

Booking software: instant, but you give up some control

Tools such as Calendly, Square Appointments or salon booking apps let customers book and pay instantly against your live calendar. They suit fixed-length appointments with no quoting: haircuts, massages, consultations. They usually have a monthly fee and need you to keep the calendar accurate.

Which to choose

  • Every job is different or needs a quote: booking requests.
  • Same appointment types, same lengths, every day: booking software.
  • Not sure: start with requests; it's easy to switch later.

How simple a site. handles it

Turn on "Let visitors pick an exact time", set your weekly hours and the length of an appointment, and visitors choose from your open times. You confirm each request in your inbox with one tap, and that time is no longer offered. If you already use a booking page, add its link instead and your website sends people there.
